“Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self.”

Cyril Connolly

The One Year Adventure Novel Writing Curriculum:
A homeschool writing curriculum package taught for you on DVD including a high-quality textbook, workbook and companion materials.

Annual Student Writers' Contest

O.Y.A.N. Contest Rules

2013 deadline: August 15, 2013

Please read these instructions carefully. Failure to follow them precisely will result in disqualification.

Who May Enter:
Any registered OYAN student who completed the course during the Fall 2012 - Summer 2013 school year. However:
1. You must be 19 years old or younger, and
2. You must not have previously won first place in this contest, and
3. You must be a valid license holder. Your valid serial number is required with your submission.

Fee:
No entrance fee is required. (It's free.)

Novel Showcase:
All entries will be posted on the Novel Showcase page of our Student Forum unless the entrant requests their submission be omitted. Finalist and winning manuscripts may also be posted on the main OYAN site. We reserve the right to refuse inclusion on our site at our discretion, for any reason.

Copyright:
You retain all rights to your work. A notice of your copyright will appear with the description of your novel in the Novel Showcase.

Manuscript Format:
Manuscripts must be formatted correctly in order to be considered. Follow the formatting instructions indicated in chapter 77 of your textbook. However, do not include your address, phone number or email address on the cover page as you would when submitting a novel to a publisher. Instead, your cover page should contain only the book title and your name (or pseudonym).

Manuscript Content:
Manuscripts must follow the general guidelines outlined in the One Year Adventure Novel curriculum. This means:

1. Your novel must be an original work in English.

2. Your novel must be free of offensive content (especially of a sexual or gratuitously violent nature). While we respect the right of authors to create honest stories, we also respect the right of readers to retain their innocence. We therefore reserve our right to disqualify any novel we deem to be offensive to a general audience.

3. Your novel must be based on the “heroic quest” story pattern, though that pattern may be expressed in many different genres. You may submit an Adventure, Historical Fiction, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Mystery, Thriller/ Suspense, Western or Inspirational novel--so long as the plot is built around a “heroic quest” model.

4. Your novel must be told in the first person point of view unless you have previously written an OYAN novel in the first person point of view. We will accept third person POV novels from students who wrote their first OYAN novel in the first person and are now submitting a second, third or fourth OYAN novel in the third person POV.

5. Submissions must be the work of one and only one author. We cannot accept works by multiple authors.

6. We cannot accept fan fiction, short stories or poetry.

Submitting Your Manuscript:
Please follow these submission instructions precisely. Failure to conform to any of the guidelines below will result in disqualification.

1. Submit your novel via email before midnight CST, August 15th, 2013. Entries received after this time will be automatically disqualified.

2. Put "2013 CONTEST ENTRY" and your curriculum serial number in the subject line.

3. In the main body of the email type a one or two paragraph synopsis of your novel. Feel free to use the synopsis you created during the first semester. Do not use any salutation or greeting to begin the email. The first one or two paragraphs in the body of your email should be your book’s synopsis.

4. Indicate the genre of your work by typing one of the following beneath your synopsis:

Adventure - Historical Fiction - Science Fiction - Fantasy - Mystery - Thriller/Suspense - Western - Inspirational

5. Copy and paste the following text into the body of the email and sign it electronically by typing your name between the /s/ symbols. Signing it means you are testifying that the novel is your own work and no one else's.

My entry for the 2013 One Year Adventure Novel Student Contest is attached. The book I am submitting is an original novel of my own creation for which I own the copyright. You have my permission to post it with the synopsis above on your site until I ask you to remove it. I agree to respect the decision of the judge(s).
/s/ Your Name /s/

6. Attach your novel in .pdf format.

7. Send your submission to us via email at:
info@oneyearnovel.com

Judging:  Finalists will be chosen based on the quality of their first chapters. One first place winner, one second place winner, and one third place winner will be chosen from among the finalists. The decisions of the judges are their own, and are final.

The winner(s) will be announced on this site and during our Contest Webinar.

Prizes:
1st place - iPod Touch. Crystal Award, custom pen, detailed judges' comments

2nd & 3rd place - Crystal Award, custom pen, and detailed judges' comments

Finalists - custom OYAN pen with rosewood & leather.

Prizes are subject to change without prior notice. But don't worry, we don't give lame prizes. ;)

Juding Process:

• Stage 1
   1. Our panel of three readers each read the first ten pages of every entry. Those stories that fail to hold our interest are removed from the competition.
   2. We read the entire first chapter, removing those novels that fail to live up to the promise of the first ten pages. When in doubt, we leave the novel in the competition.
   3. We read deeper into the remaining novels, this time setting aside those we feel merit a complete reading.
   4. We read the complete novel and discuss the merits of each. I then choose what I feel are the best manuscripts.

• Stage 2
Through an extremely difficult process that takes weeks to complete, three top awards are chosen from among the finalists.

• Stage 3
These three novels are given to two independent judges. I ask the judges to read and evaluate all three manuscripts based on the five categories listed below, and rank them in first, second and third place.

Emotion
Does the novel create emotion in you as you read it? Do you want to keep reading?

Conflict
Does the author create a compelling conflict that is carried from beginning to end? Is the story goal clear?

Value Changes
Is each chapter built around something important changing? (Or could one or more of the chapters have been omitted?)

Characterization
Do you care about the hero? How about the secondary characters? Are the author’s characters interesting?

Writing Quality
Is the author’s writing style clear and easy to read? Does the author use precise and unexpected details to create a vivid “movie” in your mind?

I also ask the judges to comment on the novels. These comments will be returned to the authors with their awards and custom pens. In addition, the first place winner will receive an ipod touch.*

*Prizes are subject to change without prior notice.

I would like to personally commend every student who enters. I am very impressed by the quality of work submitted, not just by the winners and finalists, but by many of the other students as well. It takes an enormous amount of work to complete a novel, and each of the students who completed the course has accomplished something many people only dream about. I am proud of you all.
